A GP with an extended role (GPwER) is a GP who undertakes a role that is beyond the scope of GP training and the MRCGP, and requires further training. The RCGP has a suite of frameworks to support GPs who undertake roles in a variety of topics beyond core general practice. Join the lead authors who developed these frameworks to explore more about how they can be used to expand your role into a specific area that interests you.

This is a highly structured, fast-paced networking activity designed specifically for International Medical Graduate (IMG) members. Over 45 minutes, attendees take part in three guided 8‑minute rounds of paired or small‑group conversation. Each round has a simple, practical prompt:
- Round 1 – “What I wish I’d known” (share one concrete tip about working in UK general practice)
- Round 2 – “My current career question” (name a real dilemma – from portfolio to LTFT training)
- Round 3 – “One offer, one ask” (give a small offer of help, then state one thing you need)
No slides, no lectures – just real, reciprocal mentoring. Delegates should attend because traditional mentoring schemes can feel formal or hard to access. This is low‑stakes, inclusive, and leaves every participant with a peer connection and one actionable takeaway. You will also receive a physical takeaway card with a QR code to join the IMG SIG’s ongoing online community.

International opportunities for early career GPs
Connect Lounge

Our session will showcase the international opportunities available to GP trainees and early-career GPs through the Junior International Committee, with a particular focus on our well-established and highly successful exchange programme. This programme enables participants to experience primary care in different healthcare systems, develop clinical and cultural competencies, and build lasting professional networks across countries.
Through an engaging and interactive format, delegates will hear first-hand experiences from previous participants, gain practical guidance on how to apply, and explore the personal and professional benefits of international exchange. We will also highlight the broader work of the committee, including opportunities for collaboration, leadership, and involvement in global primary care initiatives.
Delegates should attend to discover how international experiences can enhance their training, broaden their perspectives on patient care, and support career development in an increasingly interconnected world. Whether they are actively seeking an exchange or simply curious about global primary care, this session will provide inspiration, practical insight, and clear next steps to get involved.
Beyond the NHS: how non-commissioned care can relieve pressure, improve outcomes, and strengthen General Practice

As NHS demand continues to rise, innovative, safe, and collaborative models of care are essential to protect patient outcomes and clinician wellbeing. This session explores the growing role of non-commissioned care—including private GP services, military healthcare, and charitable provision—in reducing pressure on NHS services while maintaining high clinical standards.
Led by experienced GPs working across both NHS and non-commissioned settings, this panel will challenge outdated perceptions of private care and present it instead as an integrated extension of the general practice workforce.
Delegates will gain insight into how non-commissioned care can:
Improve access and reduce waiting times for NHS patients
Deliver high-quality, patient-centred outcomes through continuity and innovation
Strengthen governance, safety, and accountability in private practice
Retain experienced GPs within the wider system, preventing workforce attrition
This session is particularly relevant for GPs exploring portfolio careers, leaders shaping service delivery, and those interested in sustainable solutions to the current primary care crisis.
Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how collaborative working across NHS and non-NHS sectors can create a more resilient, patient-focused future for general practice.
