Professor Stewart Mercer

Stewart Mercer is Emeritus Professor of Primary Care and Multimorbidity at the University of Edinburgh, and a General Practitioner. Stewart is an international leader in empathy research and developed the Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) Measure, widely regarded as the gold-standard measure of patient’s views on practitioner empathy, and currently being used in over 40 countries including low and middle-income countries. The CARE Measure is accredited for appraisal and revalidation for doctors in the UK, and is a compulsory component of workplace-based assessment of all GPs in training in the UK. It is also recommended for use by all healthcare professionals in the Scottish Governments Quality Framework. He has worked in, and extensively researched empathy in, ‘Deep End’ general practices in areas of high deprivation in Scotland. Stewart has published over 400 papers in peer-reviewed medical journals including the Lancet and the British Medical Journal.
