
Dr Emily Brookes
GP, MOD
Starting her medical career in the Army, Dr Brookes completed GP training and spent 11 years with the Infantry in the UK and overseas, including Cyprus, Germany, Africa, Belize and Afghanistan. She developed a specialist interest in MSK Medicine and conducted research with the Institute of Naval Medicine on MSK injuries in deployed soldiers. She worked closely with soldiers experiencing severe physical and mental health difficulties after deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Dr Brookes transferred to the RAF, becoming a GP trainer, appraiser, and an aircrew medical examiner, and established the First5 MOD support network with the RCGP. Retiring from the RAF in 2017, she continued working as a GP for the MOD and NHS and led a small specialist UKHSA team during the COVID-19 response. Alongside clinical work, she now works as a medicolegal claim assessor, a medical member in court tribunals, and is the RCGP Veterans Clinical Champion.
