Dr Edward Russell-Smith
Sessional GP, NHS Shetland
Ed Russell-Smith worked as a GP in Livingston, West Lothian, for 30 years, where he founded a new practice in 2003 and led it to become an RCGP award-winning service. He was closely involved in medical student teaching, Foundation and GP training, and contributed at a national level. He served as Chair and later Provost of his local RCGP Faculty.
Retiring in 2024 proved more a reinvention than a conclusion. Ed now works as a sessional ‘Joy’ GP in Shetland, embracing the challenges and rewards of remote and rural medicine, with particular interests in clinical isolation, rural identity, and crofters’ health.
