Dr. Daniel Fitzgerald

Initially drawn to pipettes and microscopes, Daniel completed a degree in Biochemistry, and a Wellcome Trust funded PhD in Cellular and Molecular Physiology. A passion for climbing then led to a stint as a Field Guide (Mountaineer) for the British Antarctic Survey, before returning to academia as a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist for Cancer Research UK. 

However, the exposure to emergency care in the context of Search & Rescue Teams sparked an interest in clinical medicine, and Daniel decided to switch from the laboratory bench-side to the bedside. After completing his studies at Magdalen College - University of Oxford, he relocated further North to be closer to the mountains, with Scotland remaining his base ever since.

Appalled at the lack of access to even basic healthcare that many around the world have, Daniel has always seen the incorporation of humanitarian medicine into his work as a primary goal. Daniel has now worked with ‘Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders’, on seven projects since 2018. These projects have spanned everything from Neonatal care to Chronic Disease management, and have taken him to Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Syria, and most recently his second time in Gaza from where he returned at the end of February 2026.
