Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW)
Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is the strategic workforce body for NHS Wales and operates as a Special Health Authority. We lead the education, training and development of the healthcare workforce, working with partners to plan, grow and support both current and future staff.
Guided by a clear vision, HEIW is committed to building a skilled, sustainable workforce that enhances care and improves population health.
Our role spans the full breadth of workforce development. We plan, commission and deliver education and training from undergraduate through to postgraduate and post-registration across most NHS Wales healthcare roles. Using robust workforce data, we provide leadership, resources and intelligence to support effective workforce planning. We drive transformation by enabling upskilling, role redesign, flexible careers and CPD, while also attracting new talent and widening access for underrepresented groups. By developing compassionate leaders and embedding inclusive cultures we create supportive workplaces and a sustainable talent pipeline. All our work is underpinned by quality and continuous improvement.
