Dr Alex Sohal
Alex Sohal – a GP in east London for twenty years, using her experiences of seeing patients to nurture an academic GP career. Interested in the healthcare response to domestic violence & abuse (largest health risk factor for women of reproductive age) steered her to conducting a diagnostic accuracy study developing four questions, identifying dimensions of abuse in general practice, since used in numerous clinical and research settings, in multiple countries. NIHR funding led to implementation work, including cost-effectiveness analysis, mixed-methods process evaluation, qualitative and revolutionary quantitative work. Now Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London and a Tower Hamlets Health Equity Believer, she with 140 GP colleagues, has tried to improve the UK response to COVID-19 – campaigning on changing the case definition, to make messaging fit for purpose. Chris Whitty convinced to approve GPs to advise patients on COVID-19 testing unconstrained by the triad of publicised symptoms.
